Hello all,

I'd like to ask if anyone has got any ideas as to why the collar around the shutter button on my FED 2 won't stay down so that I can rewind film properly?

I know that to re-wind a film, I have to turn the collar to the 'B' and the collar will sink down and stay there while I rewind the film, but it doesn't do so.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hello contronatura, who do you think it is? There must be quite a few ebay fsu sellers.

Anyway, I've had the camera 3 or 4 months so it's a bit late to open a case, and even if I'd just got it, it would be too early to do so as I haven't sent it back for repair or asked for a swap or refund.

@geoffox23, Thanks for the link. other than the collar not staying down, the camera seems to be working alright. It will have to be after xmas before I do anything anyway as I only do my xmas shopping in the last week or so, so I haven't bought anything yet. On top of that I've got bits, such as lens hoods and step-up rings, for other cameras to buy first.

Umm, how do I get to my PM's?

I'll agree. Don't give yourself more problems with this FED-2.

(I sent you a P/M with a recommended seller who actually does CLA/repair his cameras)

Cheers

Hello Alexander, I was going to say 'thanks for the reply', but you've not cheered me up very much. lol.

I wouldn't dare disassemble it. I was hoping to avoid going to a repairman, as the only shop that I know of that deals with FSU cameras, has told me that the repair men they send cameras to, don't usually charge less than £60 for repairs. The camera cost me less than that.

Hmmm, a dirty, sneaky little plan seems to be hatching in my devious little brain.

The ebay seller (who has a lot of FSU stuff) I bought it from, told me that a shop had done a CLA on it. if I make a suggestion to the seller to check the cameras he receives back from that shop as mine has this shutter collar problem, then maybe he'll suggest a swap?

Mwahahahahaha*.

* That's my 'evil maniac laugh', by the way.

I'd be surprised if it worked, but maybe worth the gamble. Who knows, perhaps the repairer isn't a very good one but the ebay seller doesn't know?

I'll probably not try it though, as I am a bit of coward, and not really all that 'evil'. lol.

Hi Sean,
it was not a good idea to try all sorts of combinations. Once turning wrong you can break the whole rewind mechanism forever. Although FED-2 is a Leica copy, it's still FED
I would suggest to show the camera a repairman or to try to disassemble the camera, if you have any experience in this. The Maizenberg's book 'Design and repair of Russian cameras' could help you.

Thanks for the reply, Alexander. Unfortunately I've tried doing that, I've even got slightly numb fingers from pressing it down and turning it.

I've tried all sorts of combinations of : turning then pressing, pressing while turning, pressing then turning, turning only, pressing only, repeated all this with short turns, long turns etc. I've tried turning it anti-clockwise for a while in case I'd turned it clockwise too far.

I've tried every combination my feeble brain can come up with, the collar just won't stay down unless I keep it down with my thumb.

On FED-2 you have to turn the collar clockwise, push it down and turn it clockwise once more to fix it.

Regards, Alexander
