Hello,

Looking closely at some early Jupiter 8 lenses in Kiev mount I can identify about 5 different types.
I assume that this has already be done before so please correct me if I'm wrong, and add samples.

Here we go :

Picture one Type1, Type1A

On the left, type 1 is pretty close to the ZK lens with the 'ears'. Besides it's the same without 'ears'. So, Two lenses : T1, T1A.

Picture two Type2

A comparison between T1A and the pretty common version of J8 (type 2). There's some obvious differences. T2 has a blakened outside filter ring (1), focusing barrel is not so large (2), mount manufacturing is slightly different (3)

Picture three Type2 Type2A

Around 1957 there's no more 'n°' printed close to the s/n. Lens seems to be identical. So, Type 2A

This is great article! Would you continue to classify Jupiter 8M?

Jed, it is a great article, how come you posted it to forums though instead of articles section? I can repost it there for you later.

Thanks,
Vlad

Thanks lots !

Okynet,

Sadly I only own some samples between 1958 - 1962. I need later samples, so feel free to post pictures.

Vlad,

I agree the articles section is a better place, but I think we can improve the classification before. So feel free to post comments or pictures of your lens if they don't match my list.

Best,
Jed

PS : Vlad, I realise that I can edit the text and pictures in the articles section. So, you can copy my post in the proper section. Thanks !

type 2A : 1957 - 1959
type 3 : 1959 (1958 ?)

A new addition : type 4

1951-1959
made both by KMZ or Arsenal
pretty close to type 2 but outside filter ring is the same as type 1 (non painted) and there's a pretty fine engraved s/n.

Looking at the rear of the lens there's no black paint added for type 1, 1a and early type 4 (1951). Type 2 - like type 3 - is always found with black paint as shown :
