A word to the reader

This beautifully published book is not made for decorating your bookshelf. According to the concept and execution it is everyday desk encyclopedia of Soviet imaging cameras for all years of the Soviet Union, complete (or nearly complete, correct to say - The mostly complete), a systematic list of cameras from the most mass produced to the most rare, surviving perhaps in a few examples or even a single copy. There are quite painful examples of a loss of a single product and rare prototypes remained only in memory and on paper. Future of this publication seems to me a truly unique - such classified encyclopedia is exceptional and will remain in the history of photography as the only unique example. After the Millennium lost not only the former country, with its truly massive public photo-amateurism, but technique from the traditional silver halide imaging technology to photosensitive materials with their fine tuned optical mechanical equipment and image processing. Photography of past year, did not die completely, but becomes a craft of the professional elite, and the equipment for it becomes museum rarities. And, as always a rarity, over time it becomes all unique and not available and more expensive not only because of being in the form of glass and metal, but valuable as a vessel for any true information about it.

It is essential that the contents of this book is not only collected (sometimes bit by bit) from a variety of sources, but carefully handled and systematized to the point, which coincides with true museum requirements. The degree of detail in the accepted classification does not yield to the most detailed description of the museum quality of international level. The completeness of the materials collected this publication clearly superior to any (alas, very few) domestic and foreign materials on Soviet cameras for all seventieth anniversary of their production. Years of dedicated work of the enthusiasts in love with his work and sponsors include official visits to manufacturers and talk with their veterans, "expeditions” to private collections and collectors, thorough research in libraries, books and technical documentation. Books were not formed in vacuum, but on a solid material basis of one of the most complete existing private collections of Soviet cameras that were collected by authors in the Minsk museum, entitled "Mir-Foto”
Collecting is a great passion. It allows you to combine inherent human desire for ordering objects surrounding the world with the expansion of their knowledge and outlook. Collecting photographic equipment in this regard is especially attractive and promising, as it is material, rather small-sized and (in contrast to the medieval paintings or luxury cars) and is fairly affordable price. Finally, it qualitatively limited in time and space, but, being collected until the desired satisfaction, then becoming full-fledged
member of the most prestigious international auction houses and zest of the major museum exhibitions. Good collection of equipment - it is not only the history of technology and its creators, it is a national treasure, the country attesting to its technical level and technological development. Collecting and documenting such a collection of years of Soviet power - in my opinion, one of the important and patriotic tasks of our generation. Collecting is a worldwide passion. There are special shops, fairs, exhibitions, auctions, specialized publications and journals made especially for this endeavor . This Encyclopedia is certainly a unique and indispensable information base for any collector and any dealer selling photographic equipment of Soviet manufacture. This niche has not yet been filled and awaits new members who understand it as a museum guide and photo equipment, where for him it is like a time machine, instantly porting you in past years of search and success. And whatever you decide to collect from the Soviet photo equipment, do not forget that one should begin immediately.
