Illustrated Catalog of Soviet Electronic Photo Flashes by Vladimir Zverev

№1

Soviet electronic flash

Illustrated catalog by Vladimir Zverev

This catalog is exploratory in nature and not intended to be encyclopedic level.

Any great state famous for its history. And the history of the development of Soviet electronic flash is closely intertwined with the history of the Soviet Union.

I was born in the Soviet Union, and I am interested in this part of the history of my great country. This article was written for the interest and for the Idea. On it spent a total of two months. I mean - not sixty calendar days, and about a thousand hours, torn from their sleep and from the rest when I come home after work. If you multiply this time on my salary, it is priceless. Apriceless things are done for the Idea.

This catalog is, of course, the prototype. Issues when drawing up there was a lot.

As mentioned earlier, under the planned economy in the Soviet Union the same model of electronic flashes are produced in different plants. So flash 1959 Norma FIL-1 structurally resembled "EV-1" type "Molniya" plant MELZ 1955. Flash Norma FIL-40 was a copy of the Kharkov flash "Svet." A photo-flash "Leningrad EV-5" released as "EV-5" in association "Sigma" in Lithuania. But some time later the Baltic designers went their separate ways.

I can not say this with 100% certainty. (for this discussion.) This product was produced in defense enterprises and official data were classified, and in the period of "Perestroika" lost in the factory archives.

Besides some missing models have also questions the true producers of these products. It was very difficult to determine the actual manufacturer of a particular model. Flashlights made by government military facilities as a "sideline" products. Raised only Factory logo. And in the instructions and on the warranty card raised the address of the repair shop.

Some models, judging by the logos ("EV-5," "Photon", "Zelenograd", etc.), released on 2-3 plants.

Also in various references are found on different characteristics of the same model. As in the different instructions on the same model flash different years of release. The front panel and the calculator Extracts, product color, embossing glass reflector - everything changed within a single model.

Product post-Soviet period? They are Ukrainian, Belarusian and Moscow. A marking on them - the Soviet. Flash series "Electronics PV 30__hh" developed industrial association NPO"Zenit" (???), their production has been established in several Moscow factories. Flash series "Electronics PV 20__hh \ (" Danko ") made in Lviv.

Generally, some of the company who sold the Soviet optics abroad (for example, English TOE - Technical & Optical Instrument, Ltd.), actively used the well-known, although not registered, Helios brand to staff line interchangeable lens lenses manufactured in the Far East (although they not given her for optics production Krasnogorsk - unlike the above objectives were not raised trademark KMZ)

In addition to interchangeable lens, under the name of «Helios» sold (and still occur in the sale) and also other photographic accessories: flash lamp (see. Examples advertising firm TOE page Booklets Archives section), tripods, photo bags and other from quite a well-known manufacturers.

In this directory, you will meet certain technical and historical concepts, as well as obsolete concept. So I will try to explain them in advance.

Abbreviations:

127, 220 - powered by an AC 127V or 220V

300 - power from the DC source voltage of 300V

330М - The battery-powered 330-EVMGZ (dry-cell battery type "Molniya")

А – accu battery, for example 2NKG - 0,7DV (2.5V);

Зу - charger

Вб - Electro mechanical vibration voltage converter

Пт - transistor voltage converter

БП - power Supply

О - Illuminator

Э - low-voltage element (such as 373 ("Saturn", "Mars") \ item type D)

Electromechanical vibration voltage converter

In modern photoflash to improve low voltage (a few volts) to work (about 300 V) applied voltage converters for semiconductor devices - transistors. DC voltage low voltage battery is converted into AC power which increases transformer to work, and then rectified to charge the storage capacitor.

В советских импульсных фотовспышках ранних выпусков использовались электромеханические преобразователи напряжения, так называемые «вибропреобразователь напряжения».

In Soviet pulsed photoflash early issues with electromechanical voltage converters, the so-called "vibration voltage converter "

"Vibration voltage converter "- an electromechanical device designed to convert low voltage DC to AC voltage by switching contacts.

Vibration voltage converter. Made in GDR, (photo by Alexei Abyzova)

Vibration voltage converter (or electromagnetic voltage converter) are electromechanical devices which serve to convert a DC signal into an AC signal by periodically switching circuit by the contacts. They are less reliable and are more susceptible to noise at work. Once launched production of dynamic capacitors (1973-1976) and transistor voltage converters - the use of the “Vibration voltage converter” in the production of voltage flash units over.

Since e-filling on the Soviet photoflash several lagged behind the best foreign samples for offline use Soviet (powered by AC 220v) photoflash were provided a variety of external sources of supply.

330М - The battery-powered 330-EVMGZ (ЭВМГЦ )

(dry-cell battery type "Molniya")

For the first Soviet electronic flash and powerful "hammer" photoflash like "Luch" or «FIL-100-x» for stand-alone use used dry-charged battery. The most famous product- "330M" battery type "Molniya" 330 EV MHz -1000 \ 1250

Symbol structure

"Molniya" - trade name;

ЭВ-high-volt

МГЦ– (MHz) - manganese-zinc system;

For older models photoflash also used: dry battery type 320-PMZG, GB-300 №2, GB-300 №4, or others. They are same characteristics with battery "Molniya"

Power from a DC source voltage 300V

Power from a DC source voltage 300V implies a: the use of an external power supply for Power from a AC 220v photoflash. This voltage converter voltage transformed from a few batteries in a mains voltage of 220V

The peculiarity of the Soviet powered by AC 220v photoflash became available voltage converters. They appeared in the 70s. The converter is self-powered photoflash in the absence of mains or for more convenient work with the flash. He used a standard low-voltage battery ("3336L» \ «3R12» and «373» \ «D»), allowing the outbreak to operate independently from the AC

In the Soviet Union issued the following voltage converters.

"PN-70" - Voltage converter for photoflash "Svet," "Photon" and some other models.

"IPV - 1", the flash power supply to powered by AC 220v electronic flash type "SEF-2\3."

"BPF-1", "BPF-2", high capacity power supply powered for autonomous power for powered by AC 220v photoflash (type «Norma FIL-105") with a nominal energy 36J.

"ABP", Autonomous power supply for powered by AC 220v photoflash (FIL-16).

"PNM-1", voltage converter to flash "Luch." Replace the battery "Molniya". The device is used for high-powered photoflash.

Accu battery type NKGZ (НКГЦ)

(Nickel Cadmium sealed cylindrical Accu battery) is able to replace the battery size AA, but, in contrast, may be charged. So interestingly, that the Soviet NKGZ -0.5 after 20 years (!) more workable.

Nickel-cadmium batteries size AA became available in the 80s and was worth more than 3 rubles, which was very expensive. Not everyone can afford such a luxury.

It should be noted, similar to Soviet (cheap) batteries today have a grade lower than the Soviets. Of course, the "top brand" like Duracell, Energizer, Varta, Sanyo - apart from the competition.

For the Soviet flash lamp FO-1b used batteries FBS-0.25 (Lantern battery dry, capacity 0.25 A • h) In the USSR, the elements were designated 1,3FMTS-0.25, FBS-0.25 (Lantern battery dry, with a capacity of 0.25 A • h), later - 332 (with salt electrolyte) and A332 (with alkaline electrolyte). 1,3FMTS-0.25, FBS-0.25 (1,3ФМЦ-0,25, ФБС-0,25)

element “Sirius 332”, also known as R-10, also known as FBS-0.25

Currently available in only a handful of manufacturers.

Hit number one in sales in the USSR were certainly 3336L (in modern classification - 3R12 \ 4.5) is popularly referred to as "ploskaya" or "kvadrat" ("flat" or "square")

Initially, in the 1950s - 1960s battery had tradename KBS (КБС –“для карманного фонаря батарея сухая”, flashlight battery dry), and later 3336, "Planeta", "Rubin". There were "summer" and "cold" variants, they were designated KBS-L-0.5, 3336L and KBS -X 0.7, 3336H, respectively. Electrodes were sealed paper control tape with repeating the words: "Do not you check not to disrupt the" ", and check that they can be, only revealing the - language if burns, so favorable.

.

KBSL-0.5 or 3336L on 4.5V the (flat batteries from a flashlight (also known as 4.5 V \ 3R12)

Alkaline battery options were not issued. When the service life has ended, they tend to flow electrolyte generally became visually clear.

Followed by "3336" by popularity came thick circular elements "373" ("Saturn", "Mars", "Orion") to 1.5V (according to the modern classification of D or R20).

Most batteries are saline and they are, by definition, are flowing.

Had not yet learned how to make salt sealed batteries, in spite of this, the quality was always good. For large capacity battery size D (element 373) were quite capacious. They always had a long time. Proceeded with approximately the same frequency as the "square."

Battery 373 ran, not because they were "cardboard" cup. The cup was a real, zinc, only the shelf life was limited, and the reaction they slowly passed. If guessed then Soviet designer to make a cup batteries are not cardboard and plastic!

They were not commercially available, and were collected from a limited batch plant parts MELZ for "break-in" and the subsequent refinement. They were given professional photographers and reporters. The following models of photoflash - "Luch-59" and "Norma FIL-2" were produced in large quantities and they could be bought.

The reason why the plant MELZ moved production of new models photoflash to another place has long been classified. Creative and technical force businesses were "drawn" for other purposes. In 1959, the Soviet phototelevision complex "Yenisei" installed on the space station "Luna - 3", transmitted to Earth the world's first image side of the moon. This complex, developed by Leningrad, was made at the factory MELZ. By the development of new models photoflash specialists of the plant back in 1960.

But, to the delight of consumers, once in the three republics of the Soviet Union began to produce electronic flash units.

In 1957, in order to bring control to the production line ministries were abolished, a instead created territorial departments of the national economy.

Territory of the USSR was divided into administrative and economic areas. All enterprises in the administrative economic region formed a single economic complex.

Manage them became Economic Council (Economic Council). In 1962, he created instead of the beginning of this year, 14 economic administrative regions in the USSR was created 7 economic regions that were run on 7 sovnarkhozes (совнархоз): Donetsk, Kiev, Lviv, Podolsky, Dnieper, Kharkov, and the Black Sea.

OAO"Elitan", Ukraine.

Kharkov factory Radiodetal (plant №206 (Харьковский совнархоз) Kharkov Economic Council). Plant abolished in 1998 on the territory of the plant operating on, and later - Open Joint Stock Company "Elitan." Where is the archive of the enterprise is not known.

Baltic electronic flash units.

National Enterprise «Norma»

Photo-flash lamp – PHIL (ФИЛ ). This abbreviation had Tallinn flash. But the inscriptions were always in Latin: «FIL Norma». Baltic colleagues from the former "Union" socialist republic has repeatedly argued that in fact they are still closer to Europe. Flashlights issued there have always been a stylish design and quality. And the price-appropriate quality. First plastic housings instead of metal products, various colors of devices, the first 220 v AC mains flash (so-called devices without the storage capacitor, they are lighter and more compact). Separate battery power supply flash units, Wide- and Tele- tips on the reflector. Pan-tilt reflector, the first electronic flash - "hammers", with light-synchronizer.

All these new flashes appeared in the Soviet Union first in the Baltic coast. Unfortunately, they were produced several times less than flash units in Ukraine, although some models as FIL-16, FIL-41 and FIL-46 were produced in large quantities.

In the mid-90's association Norma released a studio monoblock. But small trial batches.

In the Baltic states for flashes operating on AC 220 volts, issued the following sources of supply for the flash:

"ABP" (autonomous power supply) for the network flash (such as FIL-16). Manufacturer: National Enterprise "Norma" in Tallinn. 90th.

"BPF-1", "BPF-2" (Power Supply flash units). Manufacturer: Pilot Plant "Matas" in Vilnius 90th

Professional studio "hammer" flash had the opportunity to connect to a dry-cell battery "Molniya"

Flash" Norma FIL-1" ("EV-2", limited edition)

Manufacturer: Factory "Norma", Tallinn. Release year 1959

Development model of the Moscow factory MELZ "EV-2" more commonly known as flash "Norma FIL-1". It was produced in Tallinn. Muscovites gave his colleagues only technical documentation, product release so long.

Model "Norma FIL-1" can not be found on the second-hand market. It was not commercially available, and was made a limited batch for testing and subsequent refinement. It is issued by professional photographers and reporters. Next model - flash "Norma FIL-2" were produced in large quantities and it can be bought.

Camera with built-in flash "Elektron-2" (Photo-Flash "Ogonyok")
In the late 50s the Leningrad plant "GOMZ" (LOMO) released several cameras, codenamed "Ogonyok".
Camera "Elektron-2"

"Aidas Pikiotas" from the book "The Age of LOMO. Cameras and People" (2013):

/ ... The idea to put in one body (all in one) a camera and a photo-flash was implemented on GOMZe in the late fifties. Especially for this purpose has been developed reusable flash "Ogonyok". Probably for this reason, both the combined camera and got the name "Ogonyok", although the version with the camera, "Lubitel-2" worth the name of "Elektron" and a variant of the camera "Smena-2" (or " Smena -4") - "Elektron-2".

In extreme large body of "Elektron" was dimensional placed: camera "Lubitel-2" and electronic flash "Ogonyok" and a heavy battery for reusable flash is charging. It is safe to say that it was the giant dimensions of the chamber were the main reason that this camera into production and did not go.

Shortly after the first attempt designers of the plant has been designed and more compact version of the camera called "Elektron-2". Despite a more convenient arrangement, "Elektron-2" too no went into production. If the "Elektron" for a wide film could easily be used for more professional work, then the "Elektron-2" with a simple camera "Smena" was only just a child's toy for young amateur photographers.

It is important to recall that, apart from the two cameras were combined and pre-production versions of removable electronic flash lamp "Ogonyok " camera "Smena-2" and "Younost". Unfortunately, these samples into production did not go, they suffered the same sad fate. In the practice of collecting any version set with flash lamp "Ogonyok " is extremely rare ... /
