Hi,
I wonder if it would be possible to put camera articles into some kind of standard format, so that they are more similar to each other and more like a coherent database or catalog?
I was thinking of something like this:
- an "overview box" with a standard set of the most basic information: camera type (SLR, rangefinder, ...), film type, producer, years of manufacture, number manufactured, lens (where applicable) or lens mount, ...
- a "description" section with a general description and overview of the camera and its particularities,
- a "variants" section for cameras like the Zorki-1 or the FED-2 where a lot of variants exist,
- a "history" section where that is applicable, with cameras that have a longer or more interesting development history,
- a "trivia" section with quirky, or funny, or whatever other side information on the camera, such as "This camera is seen in the movie 'Moskva slezam ne verit'".
- a "specification" section with complete technical specifications for the camera, where possible
- a "links" section with links to other web resources on the camera.
What do you think of that?

I like it! This definately goes on the to do list! Thanks a lot for your input! That kind of participation is exactly what I need.
Are you thinking to format all that in existing system? Or maybe actually separate the editing screen into different text boxes when editing/adding an entry so it is more enforced? I mean we can also rely on users to keep the format, and provide the guidelines as a text copy on edit screen.
Thanks,

Hi Vlad,
I don't know. IMHO it would be better to keep things in the existing edit system and keep a text notice on screen with a suggestion for the article format. That makes the edit screen less cluttered and also makes it easier to make changes.

I guess I can agree and disagree... leaving it up to the members with various technical and html skill may not enforce this standard, unless someone goes in and edits all entries to contain each of these sections separated by Horizonal Rules (<HR>) and heading for each section, then users can just insert the text in between.. In perfect world this may work, and we can give it a shot. On the other hand if we do implement multiple text boxes, you are absolutely correct in making the interface overcomplicated...
I'll modify your proposed format just a bit, a few things like variants won't quite go in there, we can mention them in text but the way we were adding cameras they would actually get their own entry, because it may have it's own set of images.
Are you willing to volunteer your services in reformatting the existing entries?
Thanks for all the great suggestions!
Vlad. |
