I've just got a Kiev 4A in near mint condition off Ebay. It has had very little use ..... and this, I think, is the problem.
The camera has sat in a cupboard for the last 30 years and the shutter works, but is sticky and slow.
A friend tells me this is common with vertical slat shutters that are unused for a long time, and that it'll loosen up with use. Is he right, or does it need a CLA? |

Very good!
You can go to the second stage! Put slow speeds into operation.
Cock your camera and put speed selector in "B", The firing button has a little red point, also do the advance knob. Press the button and go anticlock wise. The shutter is now permanently opened.
Seeing the camera from the back, you will see a slight aperture in the curtains right side. Spray a bit from top to bottom.
Do the same in the bottom hole of film sprockets. Wait a bit, turn firing button to the original position. the shutter will close wit a new noise! Your camera are working now in all speeds.

Well ..... with much trepidation I lubricated the shutter with a tiny quantity of WD40 and the results are very encouraging .... shutter speeds 1250, 500, 250 & 125 now seem to be firing OK .... slower speeds I think are still sticky and unreliable but I can live with that.

Never put silicon on gears the mechanics will be glued! the work should be a complete camera dismantle and rinsing of all parts - A DISATER!!!!!!! |

Thanks Luiz .... I'll try a MINUTE quantity of lubrication tomorrow.
PS .... would silicon spray be a good substitute for WD40? |

You can use WD40 or any penetrate oil in the four corners of the curtain; in the center of the firing knob, and lift the speed dial and spray some oil there.
BUT ATTENTION:
1) DO THIS WITH THE CAMERA COCKED.
2) BE EXTREMELY ECONOMICAL IN OIL QUANTITIES *
3) WHEN SPRAYING IN THE DOWN SIDE OF THE SHUTTER SPPED/ADVANCE KNOB, DO IT IN THE DIRECTION FROM THE SECOND RANGEFINDER WINDOW TO THE BACK OF THE CAMERA NEVER THE REVERSE WAY *
* THESE CARES MUST BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY OTHERWISE THE OIL MAY REACH THE PRISM OF THE RANGEFINDER AND BLIND IT.
WAIT SOME MINUTES with the camera lens facing upwards and your Kiev will be ready for use. This procedure is normally done in repair shops and cost a minimum of US$50 - (at "Kiev-USA" around $100)
