An interesting accessory for the FED was developed in 1938 by Mr I.Pashkovsky, aiming the use of current FED cameras for taking 360º pictures.
The set is consisted of a heavy wooden tripod with a built-in metal rotating platform with internal gears, a coupling release knob and a hand crank. The camera suffers no mechanical changes
When used to take panoramic pictures, the camera is first film loaded in the conventional way. After that, the camera receives the coupler in the release knob that screws in the outer screw which permanently holds pressed the shutter release. The camera is previously set on “Z” (B), and the frame stays permanently open. The lens is then removed and a flexible slit mask is placed in the internal of the camera frame. The lens is replaced.
The assembled unit is then put on the rotating platform tight coupled via its shoe. The shutter knob with the holder screw, previously described engages in a slot in the platform, and film is wound through this same piece, no more through the winding button. The hand crank, seen over the rotating platform is screwed in the camera’s tripod nut that stays now in the upper part.
When you turn around the crank, the rotating platform begins to revolve, and the gears succeed the film traction in the opposite sense. The original FED Industar 10 revolves around its nodal point, assuring perfect focus along the scanned film. Final negative measures 24 X 314mm.
