Hello All,

I've been contacted quite a few times over the last few years inquiring about how to buy our 2 Year Anniversary FED-2 that was released in limited quantities. Our forum member Colin (urban-wombat) had really made me start thinking about possibility of making another batch.

I wanted to test the waters to see if anyone (and how many people) would be interested in purchasing one if we do a 5 Year special edition.

Last time the camera cost us 115EUR + 30EUR for special box, I am not sure what the prices are going to be now but probably along those lines.

In terms of what it would be, I was maybe thinking late Zorki-1 or late FED-1 with black wood covering and reflective chrome with USSRPhoto.com 5th Anniversary design on top.

Any thoughts, interest, would love to hear it! Please reply if you think you would want one!

Thanks,
Vlad

Hello Vlad

It would be a good idea to release a new batch of UssrPhoto cameras for the 5 year anniversary. But please let it be a Zorki, a Zorki 1 or even a Zorki 4. I personaly don't like FED's so much ... For the design it would be nice to have an other black one, but with not so much other different colors if it's possible. I will be happy to order one!

Best wishes - Guido

A should prefer a Fed 1, but a Zorki 1 will be perfect too. Or a Kiev...

PS: in some years, perhaps we will find 3 or 4 year anniversary cameras made by forgers? [:)]

I don't mind Kiev either, I can ask about Kiev as well, but I noticed he never works on them.. Zorki would probably be the his answer but it doesn't hurt to ask.

My two cents worth ( and how about that from someone who has only made 13 postings)

One of the older style Zorkie's would be fantastic... Then Kiev would also be very nice ...but WITHOUT that ugly exposure meter.

Good news - I've received a response from the person who can make these cameras, he can make them so far we just talked about Zorki-1 cameras. He needs us to provide him with some kind of general drawings, I'll design something soon and post it here for approval. A note about chrome - he is out of shiny silver chrome, but he can do glossy nickel plating, which I think would be pretty cool. I asked him about Kievs, let's see what he says. I wonder if it's even possible to do wood covering on a Kiev...

Just put something together quickly in photoshop, the the covering would be black laminated wood, black matte painted top and nickel-plated knobs and lens.

Need suggestions, revisions, etc..

Vlad As for myself I'm 50% sold on the concept .

The camera and lens type get the tick of approval.

Red lettering Black top and shiny knobs.. excellent..

I'm not sure about the black laminated wood just doesn't fit somehow!

Maybe leather in the same red toning as the lettering.

I thought black wood would be something different, last camera had a red painted body, so I'd like to do something different. I don't think they do leather on these because it's usually painted vulcanite or the wood. I have a few wood-covered cameras from this guy, they are really good quality and I thought lacquered black wood (piano-like finish) may actually be interesting. I'm open for suggestions though.. We can do dark red wood, is that any better? [:)] Or we can have a choice of wood or painted vulcanite, but then if they're all different it's not as cool [:)]. What do you guys think?

Also the mock up that I did has a very high contrast between body and top colors, I think it'll be pretty close in reality and maybe much glossier on the body, I'll have to discuss it with the maker.

Hello guys,
I allow me my "twopence" here [:)].
I find the wooden finish very fine, but it must be in more contrast with the top plate.
The wooden cover must not be black or too dark, it must be brighter (my opinion).

Hello Vlad

I would prefer a Zorki 1 in chrome finish like this one:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160582516404

The 2 years anniversary camera had a black top and bottom, so I think it could be a nice idea to change the color this time.

The engravings should be filled with black or red color, not like the example shown on eBay (no filling at all, I have such a chrome Zorki-Zorki from this seller, great item by the way).

The body color with the "Grand Piano Lacquered Black" would look very nice with such a chrome top too.

By the way: Would it be possible to receive the same s/n as the last time?

Best wishes - Guido

Hi Vlad,

I agree 100% with Guido! Chrome top and bottom ... engraving filled in with red or black ... same serial numbers as last time ... (and if you remember my "special" order for one camera last time, I would get it again this time, as well as a regular). So if that is the case I would get two. I like the piano black too.

Sorry to all not to write for so long. I have been very busy with so many things!

My best to all, Bill

High Gloss Chrome trim and the body in Grand Piano Lacquered Black* sounds Absolutely Fabulous!

Will the box be in the same colour ?

And if it also had the pop-out lens ..for myself that really would be the icing on the cake!

Re-series numbers as someone new on the block.. what numbers are vacant?

* Also Chinese 'oops Russian Lacquered Red would be very smart [:)].

Couple of things to keep in mind though:

1. He's out of chrome, so it'll be shiny nickel which is similar but has yellowish tint
2. Piano Glossy Black - I've mentioned and he said it's possible but have not seen any examples of it, so I am not sure if it'll be exact like we want it, I'll need to find out. It maybe black with wood grain, I need to wait for his reply.
3. I think it's fine if people claim the same serial #s they had for 2nd anniversary version, the people who never ordered one will get the rest of the block

I just got an email from the seller. Apparently Zorki-1 are a lot more expensive than the FED-2 and harder to get so estimated price he gave me per piece is

180EUR which is approx $250USD and the box will probably be additional $50USD. It's a significantly more expensive than the FED-2. We can get Zorki-4 for about 40EUR cheaper I don't know if it's an option because we all have to agree to get that model. If this price changes your decision or qty to order please let me know.

Thanks!

Hello Vlad is the FED 1 the same price as the Zorki 1?...

The Zorki 1 quote: $250 +$50 with postage on top of that it's getting way outside my price range..

so I reckon the FED 2 may be the best deal.

You say "significantly more expensive than the FED-2" any idea of the FED 2 cost? Colin

I would prefer Zorki-1 as well, I'll just get 1 instead of 2, but if majority want Zorki-4 instead I'll go with majority.

Colin, FED-2 is the same as Zorki-4 - 140EUR. We already did FED-2 last time, so this time the consensus is it's gotta be Zorki-4. He also mentioned with can do Zorki-C for 160EUR, so that's in the middle. FED-1 is the same as Zorki-1 - 180EUR. Zorki-3 is not an option, they're pretty scarce especially in the quantities we need and to tell you the truth I wouldn't dare deface one of those, they're pretty collectible. [:)]. So waiting for feedback and consensus.

Thanks,
Vlad

Hello Vlad and all the others

After rethinking the Zorki 4 would be a very good choice after all. Maybe the 10th anniversary camera could be a Zorki 1 or a FED 1, we will see. For the design I'm open to any new ideas, but with the Jupiter lens there could be a problem, because of the box, that have to be larger than the older one. Maybe a Industar 50 would be better? Okay, it's not so original and looks not so good ... What do you think?

If was the slim-line box.. maybe the lens could be removed and the camera fitted with a body-cap.. but that may be not such a good idea. Colin

Hello Vlad.

If this project gets off the ground.. any chance of a very rough time-line.

i.e when the deposit needs paying?

and ET for the final payment?

I realize that at the moment you may not have any idea ..but I thought why not ask.

Hello Colin

The Industar 22 and the early Industar 50's are also collapsible lenses. See:

http://www.ussrphoto.com/Wiki/default.asp?WikiCatID=25&ParentID=2&ContentID=325&Item=Industar%2D50+50%2F3%2E5+Elmar+Type+Chrome

(By the way it's not an Elmar type lens but a Tessar type looking like an Elmar, but it's yet an other story.)

For the removed lens in the small box I think that there is not enough space. So the bigger box would be a better idea. Well, a body cap I've never seen for a Zorki as far as I remember. But it would be nice to see/find one.

Best wishes - Guido

Zorki-4's that he has only come with either Industar-61 or Industar-50-2 - J-8 is not available unless you buy your own separately somewhere else. I'll go with Zorki-4 if everyone wants it but I do think Zorki-1 will look nicer and classier as a collectibles..

We first need to decide on which camera, and get exact number of people who want one, I want to wait at least another week to give everyone opportunity to see this thread, then once we're ready then the deposits are due directly to the seller/maker. I am not doing this for profit so I'm not involved in any monetary transactions. Final payment is due when cameras are ready which will take a few weeks at the least. Realistically I'm thinking we may have cameras in our hands by the end of the year or early next year since shipping from Russia takes about a month or sometimes 5-6 weeks or so..

Cheers,
Vlad

Hello Vlad

A Zorli 4 with the Industar 50-2 would be fine for me (but if the Industar 50-2 will be in black I think a black top of the Zorki 4 would be a better idea ...). The Industar 61 is often made by FED so it don't fit historicaly I think. Maybe it would be better to not mix too much the producers. And if the camera's top will be black, it's better to choose an other color for the leathering. Maybe dark blue or grey?

The Zorki 1 is a little too expensive for the moment, but I will pay the extra cost if everyone will agree. But the solution with a (black) Zorki 4 is also a very nice variant.

But if we take a Zorki 4 the lens should be a Jupiter 8 or a collapsible Industar 50 and NO rigid I-50 (looks ugly on Zorki 4). A Zorki C is not acceptable for me because I don't like it's shape very much :-)

Hi Vlad re the provisional quote

I don't wanna sound like I'm penny pinching ..I was wondering why the quote or the Zorki 1 is so high.

Okay I realise the guy is doing the engraving just for this forum and he needs 10 + cameras this of cause will push the price up.

What has me wondering is why we are talking about 180E .. $US 250 for this camera when he( Moscowphoto) is selling refurbished what looks like the Zorki 1 for $US120 .. less than 1/2 the price.

Yes he is running a business and not a charity ...but he will have guaranted sales of at least ten cameras..I thought the quote wouldn't have been so high.

I may be totally wrong and will end up eating Humble Pie.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Zorki-3opkuu-Cap-Spool-New-/160519717272?pt=Film_Cameras&hash=item255fb88198

As much as I would like the Zorki 1 the more I think about it the cheaper one may have been better choice . As I have already stated I will "go with the flow" if the Z1 what the majority of the members want.
Sorry I'm turning into a real pain in the neck.

I think it sounds a bit too expensive also. If I was ordering 10 or more cameras I would expect a better price. Zorki-1 cameras are being sold on Ebay for $60 - 80 and so the camera buyers in Russia are probably paying about $20 - 25 for them or even less at times.

We could tell "moscowphoto" what we are willing to pay and if he can't do it, maybe some other Russian camera dealer can.

Alternately, once we know exactly what we want and how many pieces will be ordered we can open the job up for bids. We can see whose bid comes in the lowest.

I know that ebay sellers "tiger_antiques" and "confdntart" both make or sell these kind of cameras ... maybe one of them can be less expensive. I have bought from both with good results.

Moscowphoto is an excellent seller of fantasy cameras: he has now beautiful Fed-Zorkis on eBay (beautiful, even if I will never buy such a camera).
But they are much cheaper than the price he proposes for our anniversary camera.
Does he have an explanation?

&#1053;&#1072; &#1087;&#1077;&#1088;&#1074;&#1099;&#1077; &#1092;&#1101;&#1076;&#1099; &#1080; &#1079;&#1086;&#1088;&#1082;&#1080;&#1077; &#1094;&#1077;&#1085;&#1072; &#1074;&#1099;&#1088;&#1086;&#1089;&#1083;&#1072;, &#1090;.&#1082;. &#1082;&#1072;&#1084;&#1077;&#1088; &#1087;&#1086;&#1095;&#1090;&#1080; &#1085;&#1077; &#1086;&#1089;&#1090;&#1072;&#1083;&#1086;&#1089;&#1100;, &#1072; &#1090;&#1077; &#1095;&#1090;&#1086; &#1084;&#1086;&#1078;&#1085;&#1086; &#1085;&#1072;&#1081;&#1090;&#1080;.
&#1086;&#1095;&#1077;&#1085;&#1100; &#1074;&#1099;&#1088;&#1086;&#1089;&#1083;&#1086; &#1074; &#1094;&#1077;&#1085;&#1077;.

The price has increased for first Zorkis and FEDs because there are almost none left and those that I can find went up in price a lot. I can check with other sellers as well..

It sounded like a good idea at the time..but I guess with the way the current economic situation ..and prices going haywire..what would be the best solution?

Go for the high priced cameras anyway.... look into the cheaper one....put the project on hold...do more research, at the moment I think Vlad has done far more than enough, so we shouldn't even think about it!.

If only we had one of those 'Crystal Balls'

Re reading my last posting .. it sounded like I though we should get the Zorki 1 for just $US120.. my point was these refurbished cameras are one of his bread 'n butter lines and of cause the special order price would be higher.. but how much higher?

In my other posting my comment was "I may be totally wrong and will end up eating Humble Pie."

Looking at the facts n figures the second anniversary FED 2 camera sold for $US157.. the average price on ebay for the fed 2 is about $US60 .. so the extra cost for refurbishing and the art-work would have been in the region of $US100

Now looking at the Zorki1 the ebay average price is around the $US80..so for my money about $US180 would be a good starting price not the quoted $US250

Now looking at other ebay stores that referbish cameras .. Moscowphoto has far the best price for the stock item. The more you look at the price other charge the $US250 dosn't sound that high ( still too high for myself)

But I still don't understand have he can sell referbished camers for just $US120

Oh dear DO I have Egg on my Face!!! as well as eating Humble Pie!!!!.....

A crazy idea - what if we all send him Zorki-1's for modification?

I just got off the phone with the seller and the maker of these cameras. Basically I managed to talk them into $180USD for the Zorki-1 on condition that we don't change the engraving graphic from 2-year model (since they already have the template) except for saying 5 years instead of 2 because making template is very expensive (Bill, I'll have to talk to you separately about your "special" model, it may be a problem according to the maker, or at least will possibly cost significantly more). But he has to find out final price of chrome/nickel first so I have call the maker again directly tomorrow.

He explained the reason the other ones on eBay are much cheaper is because they arrive to seller already pre-made and these will have to be done per order and because of low availability of Zorki-1's which is probably main the reason for much higher price, but I told him, we're willing to spread the process out a few months so he can find some more on a more reasonable pace and ship them out as he makes them to various buyers. This brought the price down significantly.

So are we all on the same page if the cameras are $180USD + $50USD for box(tentatively)?

Thanks,
Vlad

I would assume so, they fully refurbish the cameras, all the cameras I received from them before were in "Like New" condition.

I just want to mention once again, once we place a deposit, we may not see the actual camera for 3-4 months.

Everyone who is ordering a camera: I need to know whether you need a box or not. Please reply.

Also the only thing I'm waiting for is the confirmation on final camera price. The agreed upon price was $180US but contingent upon the confirmation of his cost of chroming it. It may possibly be a little bit more depending on chrome price.. I wouldn't imagine more than $10-$15 though.. If you're ready to order and want to place a deposit, feel free to PayPal $50US deposit to moscowphoto@aport2000.ru, please also indicate whether you need a special box (additional $50 or so) or not.

Hey all!
The idea of making an issue of cameras comemorating the USSRPhoto 5 years is very very cool!
I do also feel an agreed 125 dollars per unit a very good price.
Recently I posted new slyled FED5 from Malasya.
Crossing informations ideas and people desire, also calling upon Our future possibilities, I want to say:
1) Congratulations to all people who participate this forum to make it alive!
2) Considering the number of references to this site in a lot of information about Russian cameras, meaning our influence in the international group of "conneisseurs", I suggest to create a commercial logo for the group. -a Trade Mark.
a) I will remind that the present logo imprinted in our 5 year Zorki is somewhat complicated for commercial applications. I will remember the "story" f the first Kwanon (Canon) which logo, the goddess of mercy. was so complicated that halted the camera production cadence.
b) So I suggest a simple one somewhat like Russian factories camera logos like a prism or an arrow which is present in almost all of them.
3) That way I feel there are still a grat market for such cameras, and it is constantly incrasing. Of course may be not so great as in the past, interesting great factories, but still profitable for a small investment.
That way we are open to suggestins.
Regards LP

Hello Luiz!

Great idea! But unfortunately you're a little too late to the game [:)], the cameras are already in production in Moscow. But I think making some kind of unique logo should be interesting. We could use it for any kind of later releases. Maybe we'll aim smaller next time and make a custom Smena 8M or something like that [:)], we could use that there...

Good idea Luiz! Here is my idea for our logo ... a circle, representing the world as we have members all over the world ... and a prism, traditional for Soviet - Russian factories and representing the optics of a camera.

A bit rough and disproportionate as I just drew it on photoshop quickly. Maybe still time to have it on our lens caps or boxes for the 5 year model ;-)

Looks cool Bill! I like it. I think it'll be an issue to add it to the camera at this point because of the price point we supposedly reached with the maker. He said it's pretty expensive to make a new engraving template..

Just as a side note, I'm still a bit confused as to what is going on with the price here with latest communications with Mika (seller), since the maker (Sergey) is out of town and I negotiated price with him, but then the Mika says he knows nothing about it and he only knows the price of 180EUR and not $180US, and told me to wait until Sergey (the maker) comes back from vacation on Oct. 8.. there's an odd email chain going back and forth with him now.. I REALLY REALLY hope that Sergey didn't misunderstand me on the phone, because I did ask 3 times about the $180US and not 180EUR. I will keep you posted, because 180EUR is not acceptable by any means to our group.

http://www.ussrphoto.com/UserContent/5102011_Ussrphotologo2.JPG
I could also be in B/W
I believe this logo should be used in the future - not for the while.
I believe this camera should be the land mark os our 5 years with the logo we used up to now.
I promise a serius research about the matter and hope your suggestions.
Another new! My first thousand replies to the forum!

Hello everyone,

I just today received an email from Mika, who was able to connect with Sergey who returned from his vacation and gave me an update:

The manufacturing of cameras is in progress, they've prepared the wood covered bodies, painted and had lacquered them.

He confirmed the price of $180 per camera.

They are waiting if they can get chrome, if not they will use glossy nickel-plating which I think also looks very good, here's an example:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/FED-2-Stalins-executor-Jubilee-camera-s-n-001-100-/150643638730?pt=UK_Film_Cameras&hash=item23130f81ca#ht_2540wt_1341

We have a slight problem with boxes. They have the same type of boxes like before (for 2nd anniversary camera), dark brown with golden button, they cannot find anyone to do black boxes. These boxes are $50 each. He said unfortunately it's either these boxes or no boxes.

I suppose I need to get a recount of how many people still want these boxes since they are not going to be black anymore. Please let me know if YOU DON'T WANT the box when originally said you want one, otherwise I will count you in as per your original reply.

You can go ahead and send your deposits now if you didn't already.

thanks,
Vlad.

My decision was not easy.. But I have informed Vlad I will be pulling out of the project.

Recently I had a transaction with the ebay store that will be supplier of the 'Five Year Camera'. I must start by saying although the eBay store did go out of it's way in addressing my complaint .. I feel the camera I paid for still wasn't 100% as advertised.. Many people will say I'm being just bloody minded and difficult .. I guess I am . but I have that old fashion belief . "you should get what you pay for" although the issue has been resolved manly because the correspondents where just going round in circles and I had just had enough ..I did say I would over-look problems/defects.. but ask one simple request of seller supply.. He came back with a counter offer.. although I have accepted this ..the camera is still not as advertised.

I must I have no ill feeling towards the seller and wish him and all those who take part in this venture the best of luck..I'm sure with the weight of this forum behind the members everyone will get a grand camera..and I guess I will be the one who louses out..Oh well che sara sara.

Colin

PS one day I may purchase from the store.. but haven't a clue when.

I think I found someone local to manufacture those black wooden boxes with engraved tag, let me make one for myself, and I'll post it here and if anyone wants them I can make those for them and ship them out. It shouldn't be more $50 price tag or so, hopefully less..

The box itself would look something like that, it may be 4x6 inside so the camera will be a little bit loose vertically but should fit, I'll know more once I have it my in my hands. I will have custom-made plaques made to put in the lower right corner with engraving "USSRPhoto.com 5 Years".

I'm working with engravers now to locate the right metal plaque to attach to it. Will show final result once it's ready, will make them per order if you guys like them.. All, I've got an email today that the cameras for following people are ready to ship. For the members listed below please pay the remainder of the balance to Mika moscowphoto@aport2000.ru, which would be $155US if you paid $50 deposit. $180+$25 shipping. As you can see the cameras seemed to have came out really nice! I'm very happy.

#002 - Bill Parkinson
#003 - David Tomlinson
#005 - Guido Studer

The rest of the cameras are in production as I stated in the beginning it takes some time to acquire so many Zorkis.

<b>There will also be 5 Zorki-S anniversary cameras #011-015 which will be sold on eBay. I will make a post here if anyone is interested in those they can buy them from there. Pictures of these Zorki-S are below:</b>

Thanks,
Vlad.

Vlad,
thank for the beautiful previews.
Was it necessary to prepay for the camera? I didn't do it, but I think it is not a problem to pay the whole sum after the camera is finished. Could you already tell me my s/n [:)]?

The cameras look fabulous. I really regret having to pull out of this project. But I also feel one should stand by their convictions. Being in the situation dealing with the seller and not reviving the goods as described, I just couldn't justify any further dealing with this company . Some of you may say the problem was so minor I should not a have worried about it. I must admit the seller try and rectify the situation by sending some photographic extras ( of not very good quality ) But he could not address my main request, and I'm sure it would have been so easy. I paid for a limited edition camera with engraved lens cap The camera arrived with a plastic cap plus several other minor issues that I was willing to overlook. All I wanted was the lens cap I had paid for or if it could not be found another one could be engraved , I'm sure that would have been so easy.. Not so! .. the best he could do was send a plane metal one and a few trinkets ( filters ).

Anyway that's my story ..as I say the forums cameras look fantastic..and you are all very lucky.

Colin

PS re the lens cap.. I purchase Russian hat pin badge of the event my camera was commemorating
..and stuck in on with super glue.

Hello gentlemen,

I've finally finished my box project for the USSRPhoto.com 5 year Anniversary camera. I've finally found a black 4x6 keepsake box at a local store after weeks of searching for $25, engraving plates for $5 each and unfortunately I had to use a retail engraver who charged me $20 to engrave each plate since I couldn't find anyone private to do it and match the italic font close enough... So in the end I unfortunately ended up at the same $50 box [:)]. The box quality is OK, I wouldn't say great, particularly the back hinges are a little rough but the overall finish is pretty nice and matches the camera fairly close without the woodgrain that the camera has though, the box is a semi-glossy-to-matte finish. I made 3 extra engraved plate plaques so if anyone wants I can make these boxes for you and ship them. It'll cost whatever I paid for components - $50 + whatever shipping is.

The Zorki-1 camera still has some horizontal wiggle space in the box (I think Zorki-C will take up the space little better), I made a little foam insert for my own version when I'm transporting it, you can do the same if you like.

Please look at pictures carefully and if you would like one I can make one for you. Right now I have 3 engraved plates and 4 more blank ones that I can engrave if there actually demand for it.. I really wanted a box to complete my set and will be glad to make you one. Please contact me if you would like one.

Oh no! I think I spoke too soon, I just called the shop where I bought the black box a month ago, they are sold out and it's been discontinued! Damn! OK, I'm going to keep looking for a replacement box, but if you think you can find a black box locally I'll be glad to ship you the already engraved tag with adhesive on it for $25. I apologize, I guess while I was waiting for these engraveable plates these boxes disappeared. [:(][:(][:(]

Can anyone recommend a case for the anniversary camera? Not having lugs for a strap makes me a bit nervous carrying it about and using it, especially as my fingers aren't tuned to exactly where to go, yet! A half case with a neck strap would be ideal.

Also, is there some trick to removing the lens? I haven't really tried yet, but I don't want to damage it.

Thanks, Kris.

Hi Kris,

About the case, any of the bags for Zorki 1 and Fed 1 can fit... I have made a "special" half case for my Fed in use by unstitching the front part.

For the lens, you just have to unscrew.

Hi Alexander,

Mika sent me the link for tracking and the tracking # for your camera. He said if you didn't ask him to send to different address it was sent to address on your PayPal account. We tracked the camera passing through Russian customs and entering Germany. He said in his experience German customs often delays the incoming packages, he said you should try calling German post office/custom with your tracking #RA213198695RU because the package is not in Russia anymore. I hope that helps.

Thanks!
