It is the first model of FED 1 to have the "NKVD" engraving on the rangefinder housing as the F.E. Dzerjinskij Work Commune is now under the control of the "Ministry of the Interior". Many different versions of this type exist.

The first version of the FED 1b camera was made in spring of 1935.

Characteristic features are:

- viewfinder frame is "notched"

- lack of accessory shoe

- square-shaped rangefinder cam (top interior of lens mount)

- circular plug on the back (for adjustment of the focal distance to film plane)

- eyepiece rings painted black.

An example is camera #7377 owned by Bill Parkinson, shown in the images to the right.

Evolution steps:

- accessory shoe (from #8.xxx), first with tongue on the front, later without tongue

- rectangular viewfinder frame with recess (#8.6xx to 10.7xx)

- rectangular viewfinder frame without recess (from #10.7xx)

- no more circular plug on the back (from #12.5xx)

- no depression under speed dial (from #15.7xx)

- smaller speed dial, 13mm instead of 15mm (from #19.6xx)

- engravings with bigger fond (from #24.5xx)

- top plate with depression for the rewind clutch (from #44.xxx)
