Glass fibre eraser

Hello,

I think we all have some aluminium lenses with dark spots on the metal. I've found a tool that removes them easily, it's a glass fibre eraser. The one I bought is this one here:

I don't know what "Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser" is but "Mr. Clean" is the same as "Meister Proper" here in Germany :-)

Please do not forget to wear a dust mask whenever you are using a glass fiber eraser! Do not wipe your eyes during polishing. Vacuum clean your desk after work.



PS. Let me use this place to say hello to the forum! The introducing sticky is locked. I am a FSU-rangefinder fan since 2007. Visiting this site from the beginnings. Probably the most hits from Budapest were generated by me. :) My favorite cameras are the Fed-2, Zorki-3, 3M. I collect lenses - hard currency is a limiting factor, though. I shall add some gear to the Wiki Catalog later, as I get used to the forum. I am hungarian, speak English, German, Romanian, read Russian, but don't understand :). Thank you Alain and Ulrich! I always looks for great tips on restoring cameras! I have an Arfo-2A coming to me now without lens and very poor body condition, I'm planning to restore it. A new project I guess. Maybe lens and shutter will turn up in the future completing. Been known to happen . So tips like that are incredibly valuable to me.

These are great but +1 for the gloves. I am still finding splinters 3 days on.

You need to be careful with this eraser. It is pretty harsh and easily take off more metal thank you planned. Try it first in some inconspicuous place and work it gently.

For some really fine jobs I use a pencil eraser. Cheap pencil have dark eraser and they work well on some oxidized parts. For example, Kiev-4am hot shoe contact - a pencil eraser makes it white and clean, but glass fiber eraser will take all coating to the brass.

Sandor and Yuri,

you are both right, be careful with the glass fibre erazor! It can take off too much metal if you rub too much, and as Sandor says it could be harmful if you inhale the very small pieces that come off the erazor while using it. So you only need to let about 1mm of the fibres out of the pencil when using it, if more comes out they will break (they are really thin).
