Zorki-Zorki question

Hello fiends,

Today I have got a best gift for my Christmas. It's export version of Zorki type-c (according to Princelle) from 1953. Need to mention, that serial number is moved to the rear plate already and is embossed, instead of usual engraved one! But the camera has one more feature, which make it very uncommon and desirable. Who can tell me more about it?

A Jupiter 17! A real true one? Congratulations!
The JLP says it was produced c. 1960, yours seems to be from 1953. But we know that it's not reliable for rare or exceptional items.

It's right to say that I had (or will have) a Contax Ia, a II (1936) and a Kiev 1950 with its Zorki lens. No need to complain!

I have listed a lot of old soviet literature to find a Jupiter-17 lens mentioned ... The earliest so far source is manual guide for Zorki-2 camera (1954-1955) with Jupiter-17 as an alternative lens to Industar-22! BTW my #443050 camera is coming with genuine leather case to fit J-17 ...

Hi Stephan,

the main difference is optical scheme of the lens. Jupiter-8 has 6 glasses in 3 groups, while Jupiter-17 has 5 glasses in 4 groups. It's perfectly illustrated in Zoom's website.

so it's not a sonnar formula... but I presume something like a planar ?

I don't read russian, but I don't think it's a planar ... but something else, It reminds me of the formula or the ZUIKO 4cm / 2,8 for leica... which looks like a tessar but is definitvly not a tessar... very sharp but not so contrasty...

what are the results with such a lens ?

Why not Sonnar? ;) See "C Sonnar T* 1.5/50 ZM" for example...
So, Sonnar, of course... Or may be better to say that "C Sonnar T* 1.5/50 ZM" from 2000s has a Jupiter-17-like formula from 1950s? :D

All Jupiter (and Sonnar) formulas ate based on "Triplets" . Of course they are developed triplets where each of the groups are built with several elements in order to perform well at large apertures, correcting natural glass aberrations.
Jupiter 17 is a simplified Jupiter 8 lens where the central negative group is substituted by another one where the intermediate glass is now an "air lens";
It was intended to produce lower cost f/2 lenses but original J8 proved to be a better performer and marginal cost in mass production would not affect the market behaviour. So the J8 win the contend.
