KIIV 4 from 1962?

12 posts in this thread
Today a nice Kiev 4 arrived here. I wondered a bit, it has the KIIV mask but lens and camera are made in 1962. How could this be? I don't think that is it original, someony maybe has transferred a KIIV mask to that Kiev 4. But why?

Ulrich,
could you upload some photos?

Does nobody has an idea why this camera is from 1962? Well, I have read in Wikipedia about the USSR and found on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_Union this:

"The union was founded in December 1922, when the Russian SFSR, which formed during the Russian Revolution of 1917 and emerged victorious in the ensuing Russian Civil War, unified with the Transcaucasian, Ukrainian and Belorussian SSRs."

So maybe it could be that this is a version of 40 years founding of the USSR? What do you think about this?

Hello Ulrich,
it is a very interesting idea, but I dont think that it is really so. Ukraine was never ardent unifying the USSR. There were produced some Kiiv-cameras in 1958, they were dedicated to the 10th anniversary of starting the production of Kiev-cameras. May be it was some rest bodies from 1958 with new accessory shoe from 1962?

Regards, Alexander
Alexander,

I don't think that they are dedicated to the 10 anniversary of the production of the Kiev. First, the Kiev production started in 1947 but the known KIIV cameras are from 1958 and one known is from 1959. Second at least two boxes exist (one I own, one as I remember Bill owns) where a 40 years anniversary is printed on, see the KIIV entry in the Wiki catalogue here or the pictures of the box on my site: http://fotos.cconin.de/kameras/kiev3.htm#kiiv3
Maybe the 62 KIIV is a left over one, but for me it sounds not real that they have found some KIIV masks after 3 to 4 years and put tham on existing cameras. So it's a mystery :-)

Hello Ulrich,

Seems to me that it may be that a 1962 camera received a dent in the front plate and so it was replaced with a 1958 "KIIV" front plate that the repairman had from a camera that was being used for parts. Probably at that time, in Ukraine, these cameras may not have been considered as special as wee think of them today.

Regards, Bill

Bill,

yes that was a reason I also thought of. The camera was repaired by somebody. So the owner has get the KIIV plate by fluke or as you say there were many more of the KIIV built those days. But then I wonder why we see them so seldom today, normal KIEVs of that time are made very often.

What we need in our group is a former craftman or engeneer from Arsenal who has more information about the KIIVs :-)

Hello,

I have it now on eBay (I have cancelled the auction... I think, I keep it in my collection Big smile, but the others are already there) with a lot of other cameras that are duplicates in my collection. Just take a look if you are interested:

ouch!Sad
Paul,

I'm sorry Smile It was a great match, I was surprised of the german play and the australians were very good too. The red card was not fair of the referee.

And I really HATE the vuvuzelas... the only sound you can hear is this awful sound Angry

Ulrich,
Germany played like the talented and professional team that they are Dead. Last time Australia made it through its round and then went close to upsetting the eventual winners Italy. There were some that argued that Australia must be the second best team in the worldWink. This time, we are all supporting Germany now - if you win, some will argue that we still must be the second best team in the world (4-0Question)Big smile.

Ah well, we have learnt from the Americans. We are world champions at Austalian Rules football Cool (and not too shabby at Rugby League either although everyone else that plays Rugby seems to prefer Union which we don't talk about anymore).

Appologies for this OT meandering post to the non-footballing forum members and those from countries with third best teams or worse Shocked.

Regards,
Paul
