Post war Smena is a landmark in world camera construction. At first by funny (or strange) coincidence "The Change" or pehaps "The New Breed" appeard on the market just after Stalin's death. It marked the beginning of a new Russia politics.
But look to Original 1953 Smena, SmenaM Smena2 Smena2M Smena3 and Smena4 The finder are reminiscences of the VOOMP GOI,(from LOMO) itself an extension of the Leicas. and their lenses also accept 36mm accessories,and had front ring diaphragms, also reminiscesces of the Leicas, FEDs and Zorkis. A between the lens shutter and an extraordinary simple film advance- No rewind. The between the lens and advance system have a direct heritage from the Leica Compur! The cassete to cassete loading and removable back, obviously came from Contax! I did use these cameras and results are more than decent, Its lens originally (T22) 4.5 triplets with reduced focal length -This very interesting optical trick reduce aperture and focal length and lens elements - propiciates the same resoluton as Industar 22 at half the price! . and can use same sunshade filters and close-up lenses used in Leicas FEDs and Zorkis. No loss of quality versatility and an exceptional low price. Note that when Industar 22 upgraded their glasses to Industar 50 also Smenas' T22 upgraded to T 42 and soon after T43.
The new series born with Smena 5, herited the new original Zeiss Werra cristal block finder. This finder basis were first used on Contaxes, Super Ikontas and Super Nettels. Which better formula was known? The shape was changed absorbing Leningrad style, another atempt to reduce selling price was the incorporation of the reversible sunshade, again of Werra influence, and banning the costly (camera comparing) eveready case. Smena6, Smena7, Smena8 and Smena9 returned to the original camera and case formula, hoping spreading its sells, and they were better.
Sadly Smena 8M although mantaining the same general proven formula, deteriorated the overall mechanical quality probably because the paralel production of Smena SL, Smena Rapid, Smena Symbol models.
Smena 35 although with a fine lens and shutter was still worse in term of strength and presentation, but complicated desassemby for maintenace finally killed the camera. A wrong strategy.
